I don’t think anyone can ever over-stress the importance of taking care of your skin! It’s what makes you, you and you only get one shot! I have been paying more attention to my skin ever since I hit the age of 20, which was 4 years ago (WHAT?!). Being a mom, going to college, jobs, and the environment seriously takes a toll after awhile. I’m a firm believer in starting a good, anti aging skincare regimen early on in order to prevent damage and problems later on.
I first noticed a huge difference in my skin when we moved to California for a year. I’m an East Coast girl, so I grew up in the humidity. The dry California climate wrecked havoc on my skin because I wasn’t used to it and didn’t adjust my skincare regimen. I was breaking out really bad, had super dry skin, and starting having dark spots on my face.
When we got back to the East Coast I started using products with retinol in them to reverse the damage. (the products I use you can find here and here) Retinol products have so many amazing benefits and I could preach all day long about how good it is for your skin! Not only is it good for preventing signs of aging like wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots, it also can increase collagen production (key for that plump, youthful skin), AND it is also good for acne and to reduce large pores. The key factor when using retinol products is to be consistent. Non-prescription retinol products are gentler on the skin and easier to use and, personally, I think that is all anyone needs who is young and trying to start a prevention skincare regimen. Only look into prescription strength with a dermatologist if you have major concerns for your skin.
Another big part of any skincare routine is washing your face. Especially us make-up loving girls, we need to free our skin every night! I sometimes have to wash my face two or three times just to be sure everything is off and my pores are clear. I also use a brush or microdermabrasion crystals a few times a week to really help get everything clear. I’ve tried a few more expensive face washes and I’ve found I like drugstore one’s just as much. Just make sure to buy one that suits YOUR skincare needs!
I also love masks and peels, which I’ll do once or twice a week. I love this glycolic peel: my face has never felt smoother and looked more radiant before using them. It has a blend of retinol, green tea, and chamomile for maximum benefits and its only 30% glycolic which is why I’m comfortable using it myself at home. Dead sea mud masks are also a favorite of mine. It really cleans out my pores and even helps to clear acne and reduce lines and wrinkles!
The last thing I want to talk about is sunscreen! I will not go out in the sun without 50 SPF or higher! Whatever one I’m using on Zakiyah is what I’ll use too just because the sun is so damaging to your skin! I’d rather be a little pale than have the darkest tan. I’ve also found that my skin has really changed since having a kid a getting a few years older. In my teens, I never used to burn in the sun but now I do every time if I don’t use sunscreen. So you really have to adjust your skincare as the years go by and circumstances change.
I hope you all find this post helpful if you’re looking to start a skincare routine or even if you’re looking to update your current one. Just remember, prevention is key and starting early never hurts!
